Craftsmanship in Úbeda: tradition, identity and know-how

In 2012 Úbeda was declared an “Area of Artisan Interest in Andalusia”. The declaration recognizes the relevance and uniqueness of the craftsmanship of the city, as well as the diversity of the existing trades and the artistic quality of the pieces, which combine tradition with new designs.

Traditional crafts and materials

The craft trades that remain refer us to a long historical experience: pottery, artistic forging, cabinetmaking, artistic stained glass, vegetable fibers and Mudejar coffered ceilings, are some of the sectors in which the artisans stand out, exporting their production to the different confines of the national and international geography. Each of their products enjoys the exclusivity and authenticity of handmade products, the result of the transformation of noble materials with traditional techniques. In addition, they have important recognitions within the artisan world (Master Craftsmen, National Craftsmanship Award, National Design Award…). Any object that comes out of the ubetenses workshops, big or small, simple or complex, is today a museum piece, worthy of being preserved and admired.

To make the most of the artisan experience in Úbeda, it is advisable to take time to stroll leisurely and let yourself be surprised. Talking to the artisans, being interested in the creation processes and the origin of the pieces enriches the visit.

Choosing local crafts is a way to support the city’s economy and contribute to the preservation of traditional crafts. In addition, it guarantees an authentic and culturally valuable souvenir.

Handicrafts in Úbeda are much more than souvenirs. It is a testimony of local know-how, an expression of the history of the city and a way to prolong the trip beyond the visit. Each handcrafted piece holds the essence of Úbeda and allows you to relive the experience over and over again.”
