House of the Towers

House of the Towers

Úbeda , Jaén Civil building

Description

BIC (Cultural Heritage Site) 16th century. Plateresque style. The commander of the Order of Santiago and city councilor, Don Andrés Dávalos de la Cueva, ordered the construction of this grand palace, making it the first mansion in Úbeda. It combines elements from the medieval period and the early Renaissance, and even includes late Gothic elements. Its impressive facade is flanked by two large towers, symbols of the family''s prestige. From the extensively renovated interior, the courtyard is preserved, where the decoration stands out. Around it are distributed tondos with reliefs of representations of knights and virtues, mixing with wise men or heroes from antiquity and even gods, in a strange and unprecedented conjunction. Another element that attracts attention are the monstrous gargoyles, representative of vice and irrationality in contrast to the virtues depicted in the tondos. This iconic monument is the subject of one of the most well-known local legends: that of the walled-up woman. Currently, it serves as the School of Arts and High School of Arts Education.
