Description

Plaza Vázquez de Molina or Santa María. Classified as 1st degree in the PEPCH. Area of Outstanding Universal Value. The emblematic square that does not leave the visitor indifferent, when finding behind the winding streets of medieval layout this large open space, bordered by the imposing buildings of Santa María, the Juan Vázquez de Molina Palace, the Dean Ortega Palace and in the background, dominant, the Sacred Chapel of the Savior. These, together with the landscaped areas, the Renaissance fountain and the esplanades create a unique environment from which the monumentality of a square conceived within a triumphant European renaissance, uniting the religious and the civil, can be appreciated. The Vázquez de Molina square, along with the 1st of May, and the Andalucía (although both of a commercial nature) form the nerve centers of the old city. In a certain sense, it replaces the Alcázar as a center of power, already stripped of its previous functions and contents and which is gradually being abandoned.
