Church of Saint Paul
Description
BIC (Cultural Heritage Site) 13th-16th centuries. Among the most important, oldest, and most representative parishes of the city, it holds significant celebratory and assembly importance for the citizens. It retains the original Romanesque basilica layout, although most of the building visible today is in the Gothic style, since it was burned and looted in 1368 during the war of succession. It also includes major subsequent stylistic renovations. The church stands in one of the main and largest squares, namely May 1st Square (commercial in nature), with a staircase leading to a magnificent Gothic-Isabelline portal. Next to it, "el Tabladillo" was added in the 16th century, a Renaissance gallery from where ecclesiastical and Council decrees were read, and from where public events in the square could be observed. Another notable portal for its antiquity is the Carpenters'' Portal, at the foot of the church. It is one of the very few examples of late Romanesque architecture in the city. Another element to highlight would be the Renaissance fountain on the side of the church, built in 1591 as part of a program of reforms and improvements carried out at the time. Inside, over the Gothic setting, the great work of Renaissance ironwork in the noble burial chapels stands out.
